Venom ~ The Road Runner Car!

Venom ~ The Road Runner Car! What do you do with a 160,000 mile, battered and a little too rusty member of the family? A practical solution is quite simple; “Throw it away and get another one!”

OR?

Have some fun!

We chose the latter of course! The car we are referring to is a 2006 Mazda MX5. She’s had a hard life which does include some off road competition. We purchased her two years ago as a ‘cheap to run’ for the next year. She was already lifted and very tired but with a good heart.

The first thing to do was weld her up and gain her structural strength back. Nothing special and not particularly pretty, but massively effective. Then comes the “how do we make her look better” without days of dent fixing. We gave ourselves ONE weekend only! At this point, I would like to introduce the team.

  1. Myself, Rob. “The Professional”.
  2. My wife, Gem. “The Brains”.
  3. My son, Robin. 13 years old. “Creative Assistant”.

We opened the left over paint cupboard to see what looked good. We decided to go with the old tired race car theme. So dents and miss shapes just added to her charm, plus the paint finish is not so important. Lace work being Robin’s signature style was needed somewhere, hence the stripes.

Mazda MX5 called Venom painted purely for fun to look like a battered race car. Also known as the road runner car.

In the end what you see here took four days. Two welding and two ‘prep and paint’, so please do not look too closely as this has been an exercise in having fun. To do this properly wasn’t an option as we would never have found the time. Does she bring us joy? Yes she does. Venom also carries a signature road runner that I painted on the N/S rear quarter. This was an idea of Robin’s as he thought it would be hilarious to make it look like the road runner was actually running as the wheels rotated. What we didn’t know was going to happen was that this painting became so known to the point where we literally get people waving at the car as we drive past and have heard various shouts of “Look! It’s the road runner car!” She’s an utterly bonkers car and we adore her in every way.
